I’ve much enjoyed reading Sonia Purnell’s biography of Pamela Digby (Churchill/Harriman) on a plane back from Bangkok last week and learned how much of an influence she was on United States decision-making in terms of support to a beleaguered UK during 1940 and 1941. I have written on this subject in my book Under A Darkening Sky. Sonia Purnell has given the subject a thorough and sensitive, treatment. Sex has always played a significant role in politics, but none played the game more assiduously - and to such effect - than Pamela Churchill during the difficult early years of the Second World War when Britain stood alone against overwhelming odds. She was truly a remarkable woman, one of Winston Churchill’s secret weapons in the development of a positive American attitude to the UK at a time of its greatest trial.
The book is highly recommended.
