Saul David has rescued the North African campaign post Operation Torch from needless obscurity. We should be grateful to him. His new book is an easy though insightful and even compelling read. He combines the academic’s concern for analysis with the storyteller’s wish to persuade us of the virtue of his argument. He does this for me in spades.
