I’ve had the privilege of interviewing Sir Antony Beevor this week to discuss his new book on the two Russian revolutions of 1917 and the civil war that followed. Do check out the interview on the latest magazine (Edition 10) here. The podcast on which this is based will be up soon
It’s sitting in my to be read pile. I’m currently reading the nightmarish The Soviet Myth of World War II, written by Jonathan Brunstedt. Nightmarish because of the writing style. However one thing is crystal clear, the utter lunacy of the Soviet system. In crafting their history of the Second World War they absolutely tied themselves in knots trying to create a socialist narrative while pushing back on a Russian centred account. And switching from the Stalin cult to utterly repudiating him. It’s demented.
The level of medieval cruelty, which was sadly not new information to me, was beyond belief. Does make one ask in all seriousness if there is something seriously wrong with the Russian view of life and death. This was not a new phonemen then, and is clearly still with us.
