I wasn’t going to buy this book however I might change my mind. I’ve read Taylor Downing’s book Night Raid (Little Brown, 2013) and it is a remarkable story. Definitely deserves to be much better known to the public.
I’ve now read both, and they’re both excellent. Hastings is less detailed (it’s shorter) and Hastings is probably better st polishing the personalities. He is a storyteller after all, rather than being primarily an historian.
Thanks for this comment, I like Max and enjoy his work but your comment about Night Raid and a quick check online tells me that I will want to read that one.
Thanks Rob for your usual erudite opinion on the story as written by Sir Max and to James for the recommendation for the historians research. It would seem that reading both with give a true perspective.
This raid was featured in a post-war movie, School for Secrets (alternatively titled Secret Flight), which was loosely based on the beam wars. Ralph Richardson played a boffin participating in the raid. An enjoyable movie of its time.
