Hi Rob - it is of course a gimmick as there is almost no chance the Conservatives will be in power after the next election . The current opposition will not support it as an amount to spend as they will claim other priorities.
I find it very interesting that we're debating between 1.5%, 2%, 2.5%, and 3-5%. But what's hidden in the rest of 95%? (we = the general western nations here) How come the 95% is never under discussion?
Or do people still think somebody else (geography, US, something else) will take care, long-term, of their country?
