A really good read - which revived many memories. I was WEO of HMS Resolution in the same timeframe, of both Port and Starboard crews (my opposite number was sacked - and who else would be immediately available?). I recognise almost all points of the article, especially the Familygrams; all I got from my dear lady was how well her cricket team (the Windies) were hammering my team. Thank you for bringing it all back to life.
My younger brother served on a USN Polaris boat and even got me a quick 'walk thru tour' - in one hatch, keep walking, out the other hatch - but we never conversed at this level of detail. But between a year at the US Naval War College and lots of time at the State and Defense Departments I had a pretty good idea. Thanks very much for sharing this excellent article. I had the pleasure of watching one of the RN's boats pass by our B&B on the Clyde a couple of years ago.
Excellent writing, and vivid pictures. Thank you.
