Last week I jumped on the Battleground Podcast with my friend Professor Saul David to talk briefly about the US plans to invade Japan in November 1945 and March 1946, codenamed Operation Downfall. We didn’t have long to chat, just enough time to lay out why the decision to invade Japan was so momentous politically, and militarily of course, and why the appointment of MacArthur was inspired, not so much because of the needs of battle, but of the endgame that would necessarily follow.
Can I recommend a book on Downfall? Yes. John Skates “The Invasion of Japan” is excellent.
It doesn’t take long to listen (38 minutes), so do jump on the pod and enjoy!
Thank you Robert
Another novelization was published in 1971 by novelist David Westheimer as "Death is Lighter Than a Feather" - his treatment was historically based novel - https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/278753.Death_is_Lighter_than_a_Feather
