All Chindit operations, whether Longcloth or Thursday, relied much on the humble mule as did, of course, main force 14th Army operations.
Many years ago I interviewed Lieutenant Philip Brownless on the subject of mules in Burma. I will post his recollections of Chindit training - and encounters with mules - in a separate post. In the meantime, to popular demand, here follows the next chapter in the hilarious Jungle, Jungle, Little Chindit by Patrick Boyle and Jon Musgrave-Wood (Delhi, 1944).

Growing up in Missouri I have long held mules in high regard and noted how many have gone to war in the Second World War and even as aid to anti-Soviet fighters in Afghanistan. It is my impression that none of them ever returned to the US.
