I’m very excited to announce that I will be supporting two tours to Burma, led by Sampan Travel, from 25 November - 8 December 2023 and again next year, from 24 February through to 8 March 2024.
Do come with me if you can. They will be the first tours to Myanmar since I was turfed out in March 2020 because of the onset of Covid. It will be fabulous to be back. We’ll visit (in old speak) Rangoon, Maymyo, Mandalay, Meiktila and Bagan, with a comfortable Irrawaddy cruise thrown in. The trip to Meiktila, which I last did in 2005 accompanied by the late Captain John Chiles, who had fought there in 1945 with Probyn’s Horse, will be remarkable. Meiktila was the battle that General Kimura ruefully described as ‘the masterstroke of Allied strategy.’ He was quite right. It showed Slim’s brilliance, and opened the door to Rangoon.
Both tours will be spectacular. Details can be sourced from Bertie Lawson at Bertie@Sampantravel.com. The itinerary for the Feb 24 trip is shown here:
Even more excitingly, friend, filmmaker, historian and adventurer Alex Bescoby, who lived in Myanmar for many years, will be joining us for the first few days in Yangon. The journeys will support the work of Help for Forgotten Allies.
I hope to see you in Burma!
That sounds like a great tour. Partner and I are planning to visit Kohima in November and would love to come back through Myanmar. Thanks for the details.
