An audiobook experiment
Slim, Master of War on audio courtesy of AI
About half of all my books sales are audio books. Most of my earlier works, however, are not yet on audio so I’ve decided to dip my toes in self-published audio book market with the the help of AI. I’ve chosen ElevenReader to do it and have to say that I’m really impressed with the result. Its not perfect, but for the first time Slim, Master of War (my PhD and first book) is now on audio. Some of the pronunciation of Burmese place names isn’t good, but its a start.
The really good news? You can choose the voice of the reader. I think that Michael Caine is cool…
See what you think. For a first effort I’m really pleased, though a more judicious use of commas in the future for audio versions will help the listening experience. Nevertheless, I hope that you are pleased with this first effort. I always have an audio book on the go during my morning and evening dog perambulations, which means that I never have a wasted minute when I could be ‘reading’…
Please do buy a copy and let me know what you think.
If you think this works, my next step will be to upload First Victory.

Eleven labs products are not bad for that sort of thing. Given that they can be trained with about 30 seconds or so of audio, I wondered if you had thought about maybe using a simulacrum of the subject - imagine hearing Slims words in his own voice…!
